Welcome back to my Firestorm Armada coverage. Today's entry covers the smallest ships in the Sorylian fleet. The Escort class ship.
The Miniature
These are the only "All Metal" ship in the current Sorylian range. Casting is good, however all six of mine were slightly mis-cast on one of the "fins" Nothing serious and quite honestly I left it as is, I think only nit-pickers would notice.
I've got to say, while I love the entire Sorylian range of ships these are by far my least favorite design. The fins and wings of the design really don't mesh well with the design ethic of the rest of the Sorylian fleet. It's also a bit of a challenge to figure out which end is the front end and which end is the back end. There is no obvious engine ports on it, and nothing that looks like the engines on the other Sorylian ships.
I had to visit the Spartan's website and see a picture to tell which way it is supposed to fly. I've got to say to me it looks like it is flying backwards.
Escort in game
In game the escort is the smallest warship in the Sorylian fleet and is purely defensive in nature. You can't shoot at enemy ships (enemy fighters are fair game though) These ships are solely designed to escort large capital ships in battle and protect them from torpedoes and bombers.
I'm not how often they will be selected in game, for the same price you can buy a Frigate that CAN shoot at the enemy. On the plus side they do address one weakness of the Sorylian fleet and that is low PD (point defense) strength.
My ships
I like trying to theme my fleet. So I painted up three of these Escorts to accompany my Space Carrier. Similar in concept to a carrier task force in World War II.
So in conclusion, not my favorite Firestorm Armada ship by a long shot but these little guys do grow on you after a while.
So don't be shy to let me know what you think, about my ships, the Escort rules or Firestorm in general!
Later!
Are they supposed to be in scale with the planet? Or is that just decoration? I think they look fab!
ReplyDeleteAh, no, they are not to scale with the planet...:-P
ReplyDeleteI STILL think they look better flying "backwards!"
ReplyDeleteI'm with Sara, just turn them around and use them that way. I really don't think Spartan Games will hunt you down for running them backwards. LOL
ReplyDeleteHi there, I was looking for your email to ask you this but couldn't find it, so posting in your most recent blog update in hopes you see the question :)
ReplyDeleteI'm working on Sorylians (full disclosure - I will likely be ripping off some of your ideas, yours look awesome!). In an earlier post you mentioned you inked the panel lines. Did you literally draw in each line individually (I'm talking about the shading not the highlite) or did you apply as a wash?
Best Regards
Jarrett
