The Mass Effect games produced by Bioware are some of the
most addictive and entertaining video games I've played in a long time. Mass
Effect holds the unique status in our house of a game that everyone likes
playing. Even my wife, who typically would hate RPGs and Shooters on principal
can't get enough of Mass Effect.
One of the best things about the Mass Effect Universe is
the rich and detailed background created for the game. This includes Alien species,
planets, architecture and (most importantly in my book) spaceships. One of the
coolest touches from my point of view is that your Character, Commander
Sheppard, can purchase models of all the ships in the game and have them mounted
in display cases in her Cabin (yes, I play as a Femshep). It's totally
meaningless to the plot of the game but still fun to see for a spaceship junky
like me.

The SR2 Normandy is the Protagonist's ship for Mass
Effect 2 and 3. Bioware produced a collectable model of the hero ship available
from their website www.bioware.com. This
review looks at the Mass Effect 2 version of the SR2 Normandy when she was
still wearing her black, white and yellow Cerberus livery.
Forward |
The Model itself comes well packed in styro and comes
completely assembled and painted. Also includes is a very solid base for the
ship.
The ship looks like it is part die-cast and part plastic
(or resin). It is a little over 6 inches in length and very solid.
underside detail |
Paint: Is about what you'd expect for a mass produced
collectable. Better then some, worse than others. The decals/markings are spot
on and look accurate to the version seen in the game. The paint is rough in a few spots, noticeable mainly
in the transition areas from Black to yellow to white. There is a rough wash over the main hull to
bring out some panel lines but it's a bit muddy. There is no wash or weathering
on the wings or engine housing that I can see.
Application for miniature gaming. The Normandy, in the
Mass Effect universe, is a small ship with a crew in the dozens rather than
hundreds or thousands. The model is a bit in the large size for most popular
Starship gaming systems and probably wouldn't be suitable for them. However it could
be perfect for any sort of homegrown rules out there.
Scale with other gaming miniatures |
I'd love to see a miniature range set in the Mass Effect
Universe though, with the full range of Capital ships from all the sides,
including the imposing Reapers, Geth Dreadnoughts, etc.
All in all I recommend this ship. Sure there are some minor finishing issues but overall it captures the look of the Normandy perfectly.
