Dystopian Wars review: The FSA Savannah class Sky Fortress

It's a good time to be a fan of Dystopian Wars.

In this post we will take an indepth look at the brand spanking new FSA Savannah class Sky Fortress. The flying aircraft carrier is a common element of Dystopian wars and now all of the base factions have one.

The FSA Savannah Class is a great looking ship. It's basically a double decked aircraft carrier suspended by dirigibles.

First off I need to acknowledge an mistake in these Photos below. I reversed the top deck while taking these photos. If it weren't for the ramp on this deck I might keep it in this configuration. Also, as usual please click on any image to see it in MUCH larger detail.

The Model

The Savannah comes with a resin main hull and top deck. Two pieces, that's it. No metal. Also included are the 6 Tiny flier tokens(resin)

It also comes with a sturdy two peg flight stand and a Stats card for the Ship and a Stats card for the Tiny Fliers.

The resin is very well detailed and I didn't notice much, if any mold slippage on this model. The Top deck fits well with the ship and sanding was minimal.

Design wise I love the concept and execution of this ship.  It ties in well with the established design ethic seen in Lee Scoutship and Vally class. It also has elements from the sea going FSA carrier as well.

Yes, yes... I know the deck is backwards

One thing that I've got to commend Spartan for in the inclusion of Aircraft Elevators. The first wave of carriers did not have this feature and it was always a niggling complaint in the back of my head.  This ship has elevators in a logical place and they are well detailed.

Perhaps most importantly to my eye is that this ship looks good. There was a big risk that this ship would just look like a mess with twin decks, multiple dirigibles, etc but Spartan pulled of a logical, beautiful design that keeps the fantastical elements of Steam Punk and Dystopian Wars.

The Savannah is by far my favorite Carrier in Dystopian Wars by far and is easily in my top 5 favorite Dystopian Wars design (maybe my top 3)  I sense another Blog post coming on!

Some of the gorgeous detail... including elevators!

Model Grade:  5 Steampunk Corsairs out of 5!

In-game Stats:

The stats for the Savannah are not bad and are much better than the FSA Valley Forge Class Large flyer..

Basic Stats: (DR, CR, etc)

of the original 4 factions the Savannah is equal to or better then her direct competition. With a healthy DR of 7 she is harder to damage and a CR of 10 means it will take a lot to score a critical on her.  She is also ahead of the pack with 9 AA and, interestingly enough, 9 AP. only the EotBS Tenkei comes close with AA and AP of 8. The only shortcoming (if you could call it one) is a lack of any CC whatsoever

Weapons:

The Savannah has a very healthy broadside of 12, the most powerful single direct fire attack of the bunch. The EotBZ Tenkei can link her main turrets for 13 AD at short range but suffers from being a Primary weapon. The other weapon system is a 12 strength bomb rack which is almost standard equipment on all Sky Fortresses.

Overall tactical uses:

This ship is a carrier that has a powerful short ranged punch. She doesn't have to much fear of being boarded or being attacked by enemy fliers. The Savannah would be comfortable at medium range, looking for an opportunity to dive into the enemy fleet and unleash both broadsides at once.

Another, not so nice, use is as a damage sponge. This ship is so imposing and cool looking that opponents are naturally going to want to target her. Take advantage of this to get your other ships in range.

As this is a new ship I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on how to deploy this beast and make the best use of it.

Until next time!
