I recieved as a gift an Federated States of America (FSA) fleet that I've been painting in preperation for New Years gaming goodness.
Tiny FSA Frigate |
I've painted a few DW Models and have had some folks PM me on the Spartan site asking how I painted my ships. Now I make no claim at being a master painter but my ships have turned out better then I had hoped.
FSA Frigate |
For my example I am using an FSA Cruiser.
I started with a Black Basecoat. I skip the expensive hobby Sprays and use Krylon Flat Black from Home Depot. (Great black for 3 bucks or so)
I try to work from the inside out, so I start by using GW Tin to base the "Steam punky" parts of the ship, encluding the Boilers and Gun mounts.
Then I add GW Boltgun Metal, to give some contrast to the metallic areas. I wash of GW Sepia and Black washes give the metal an aged look.
I start to lay down GW Scortched Brown on the decking This is a very dark brown, which sadly, doesn't come across in my pic too clearly. This is also a great time to cover any mistakes or overpainting from the metallic paint.
Highlighting the deck. Here we cover most of the Scortched Brown with GW Bubonic Brown and then a final highlight it GW Vomit Brown (Such a horrible paint name for such a rich color)
Next up we highlight the Tin with Vallejo Brassy Brass (I think that's the name)
We also paint the hull, paddlewheel, pilot house and railings using Model Masters UN Navy Blue. (A great blue-grey color from their WWII Navy Range)
Finally the Turret is painted the the same manner, starting with metallics and finishing with the hull color.
So there you have it, not too complicated and gives a pleasing effect.
Until next time!
Outstanding work -- perfect representation of "Steampunk" and functional. Thanks for posting this with such clear pictures -- really helped. Mind if I steal a few of your ideas? ;-)
ReplyDeleteYour frigate at the top of the page seems to have a much lighter colour on the hull plating and in between the spokes of the paddle wheel.
ReplyDeleteHow and what colours did you use to get that effect?
Really nice work man. Love it!
