Snow Basing - Testing

The Arizona Desert Rats are the largest Flames of war Group in Arizona and host the Premier Flames of War Tournament in Arizona, Shifting Sands. Past Shifting Sands have been themed events that have included The Normandy Breakout, Italy, The Korsun Pocket and Africa.  I will be the Tournament Organizer for the next event (to be held in January) and the theme for the new Event will the the Ardennes Offensive.

Organizing an event like this requires a lot of preparation and as a result we are already looking at winter terrain and winter themed Firestorm Units.

I've started testing snow basing to find the best method for me.  I used a US 3" gun, the Gun isn't painted yet, but the crew is.

I textured the base with white glue and fine sand and painted it up to a good brown. This would be my base coat

I added some dead grass  and bushes sparingly
I made a mix of white glue and Woodland Scenic's Snow to create the snow areas.
I used Woodland Scenics water effects on the ground around the gun to make it look muddy.

I'm not completely happy yet with the effect ( i need more practice in the application) but at least I've nailed down the steps needed. I'm also still trying to figure out the boarder color for the base, a darker blue or lighter blue?

I'd be interested in any opinions tips and experiences in modelling snow.

  1. You might go and get some of the fine sand from a craft store that they use for the sand art bottles. I used it and some white glue to make Snow bases on some 25mm & 40mm bases, I also used Baking Soda as well. Which might work for FoW size wise and if done right has a sparkle like snow does. I'll have to see if I have the tutorial on it on my old PC and I'll post it on my blog for you.
