Flames of War Terrain - Train tracks Part 1

Welcome to another exciting episode, this time we are tackling another terrain project. In our house the Computer Game "World of Tanks" (www.worldoftanks.com) has become a minor obsession with my son and I.  One of the levels has a great raised train track running across the battlefield replete with destroyed rail cars.

Using this as an inspiration we decided to build something similar for our Flames of War games.

The Plan

To create a raised track embankment that will run the length of your typical FOW board (4x6). The idea is that this will be modular and easy to set up in a variety of ways. It also has to work well for a Flames of War game.

Supplies. 1/4 inch MDF (Just scrap I had on hand) and Blue styrofoam.
I ordered some TT scale track since it's the same scale as FOW and, if I play with a soon to be released Polish train model it should fit perfectly.

Scrap MDF cut to rough shape and used and an outline for the blue foam

Blue foam cut to shape

20" section rough cut and shaped with angle grinder

Track placed for scale

Scale shots with French Somua S-35

Testing the hight, track embankment should totally block LOS

Rough cutting the Track crossing section

40" of track laid out

First texture coat of sand and glue, leaving the track area clear for now. Adding the track will be the last step

After the glue dried I hit the piece with a couple of different colors. Grey Primer, and a couple of shades of brown

In our next installment we will

add static grass and bushes
add track
add track ballast

  1. FYI, with high banked railroads like that they built underpasses to cross them. They didn't cross over the top.

  2. Thanks for the comments!

Cliff: Yes... there will be curves! At least one anyways.

Anon, thanks, I plan on some type over underpass for one section but wanted a variety, and the inspiration included an overpass :-)
